Started in 1997, the Coordinated Youth Initiative (CYI) is a partnership between the Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF) and Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) through which WPHF has invested more than $24 million to fund free health services for students of more than a dozen schools across Winter Park, Maitland, and Eatonville.

CYI encompasses three vital components: School-Based Health Centers, the CHILL Counseling Program, and the School Nursing Initiative.

Schools we serve:

  • Elementary – Aloma, Baldwin Park, Brookshire, Cheney, Dommerich, Hungerford, Killarney, Lakemont, Lake Sybelia
  • K-8 – Audubon Park
  • Middle – Glenridge and Maitland
  • High School – Winter Park 9th Grade Center and Winter Park High

School-Based Health Centers

School-Based Health Centers

Nurse Practitioners located at Glenridge Middle and Winter Park High School offer advanced care for students and their siblings up to 18 years old at no cost to families, regardless of insurance coverage. NPs conduct physicals, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and more. Services are also available to children attending daycare, private, or charter schools in Winter Park, Maitland, and Eatonville.

CHILL Counseling Program

School-based Counselors help students in grades 6 – 12 with issues such as anxiety, divorce, grief, low self-esteem, anger management, and depression through individual, group, and family counseling. CHILL stands for “Community Help and Intervention in Life’s Lessons,” and CHILL Counselors focus on prevention and early intervention.

Students or families interested in this program should contact their school’s front office for assistance.

School Nursing Initiative

Licensed nurses in schools handle emergencies and treat illnesses so children can return to class as quickly as possible, ready to learn and make the most of the school day. Financial support from WPHF helps schools upgrade from a basic School Health Aide (SHA) to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

As part of CYI, the Winter Park Health Foundation also funds Healthy School Teams (HST) to promote health and wellbeing in schools, a concept WPHF developed and piloted.

Healthy School Teams are comprised of stakeholders from within the schools and community who plan and present health-focused activities for students and staff. OCPS now requires all its schools have an HST, and they have become commonplace throughout Florida based on this model.

CYI Information Toolkit featuring flyers, social media graphics, and more is available for schools to spread the word about the free services accessible to students and families through the Coordinated Youth Initiative.
